TREK TRAINING 2024

John Burrill, Lee Thornton and Fi Alloway hosted and ran a trek training weekend 19 and 20 October on behalf of Hanmer Horse Riders Group.

We started by heading to the skills park and getting everyone safely leading their horses on a long lead in and out of a dip, over a bridge/board walk.  Then we got everyone doing the same ridden.

Once we’d done that we then headed down to the Hanmer River reserve for lunch followed by a single file ride up river to ride in/out of the river over tree roots, scrub, bouldery terrain ups and downs, under overhanging trees.
We all learned alot including hoof boots aren’t that great in river terrain many stops to sort boots along the way.
After the river ride we headed over to St James and settled into the base hut and horses into the recently refurbed paddocks.

Had a lovely evening potluck dinner learnt a few essential knots with lots of laughs and banter.
Sunday morning up early served cooked breakfast.

Tacked up horses and away, we rode the homestead run with everyone confidently riding across the board walks then walked down Peters Pass where everyone learnt the value of leading on a long lead then we crossed the multiple creek crossings where everyone practiced riding in/out of the creeks.

By the last creek we successfully had everyone competently riding in/out without lunging or jumping YAY!!!!!
1/2 hr snack break and discussion then headed on out the Edwards’s rd practicing single file with at least a horse length in front and behind all the way back to base.

Gotta say we were chuffed with everyone’s accomplishments.
WELL DONE Y’all.
